The Rohingya refugees – Empowerment and Integration

Inputs and discussionRohingya is a Muslim ethnic community living in Arakan, Burmese occupied territory. Since Burmese independence from the British, the ruling Buddhist Burma majority is in conflict with the Rohingya people and the Muslim population of the country in general. Numerous human rights organisations have described the action by the Burmese military against Rohingya as a slow burning genocide. Many Rohingya fled to nearby countries. Young members of the Rohingya refugee community have limited access to education and are restricted in their human rights. Furthermore, these people do not have the right to employment because asylum seekers are regarded as illegal migrants in most South-East Asian countries.

You are warmly invited to learn more about the current situation of the persecuted Rohingya minority in Myanmar. Amnesty International will give an introduction to the topic, followed by a presentation of the international law aspects of the Rohingya case by Noemi Kaufmann. Thereafter, Sujauddin Karimuddin, former refugee and founder of the Rohingya Elom Community Center, will present his story and project for the Rohingya community. Let’s discuss new approaches for empowerment, integration and community building in the context of the Rohingya crisis together.
